45ACP
The 45 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol) originated in the Colt Model 1905 pistol developed by John Moses Browning. The US Army sought a 45 caliber pistol to replace the 38 Long Colt. John Browning subsequently chambered his masterpiece, the Model 1911 pistol in 45 ACP, and the legend was born. The original military loading consisted of a 200 grain projectile traveling just over 900 fps. This soon changed to the now standard 230 grain bullet at 800-850 fps. The Model 1911 served as the standard U.S. military sidearm for over 70 years. Although officially replaced by the 9mm Beretta in 1985, the 45 ACP cartridge remains in use with Special Operations units. The 45 ACP has long been one of the most accurate, dependable and popular pistol cartridges. It shows no signs of slowing down, but rather regaining popularity, especially for handloaders.
